Many socialists have pointed out the inegalitarian and anti-democratic features of the American constitution. But since the election of Trump in 2024, who promises to strain and even break constitutional norms, many socialists have felt compelled to uphold and defend constitutional norms around freedom of speech, assembly and the division of powers.

This talk will address these ambiguities, while recognizing how the American constitution also abetted the power of the reactionary right.

Matt McManus is a Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Michigan and an incoming Assistant Professor of Political Theory at Spelman College. He is the author or co-author of The Political Theory of Liberal Socialism and Against Post-Liberal Courts and Justice amongst other books.
